Island theatre performer stands for Green councillor

Joining the recent announcements of teenage candidates for the County Council elections is the well known Island theatre performer Nathan Stubbings, 18, who will be on the ballot for the Isle of Wight Green Party on May 6^th.

 

A talented singer, public speaker and environmental activist, Nathan has taken this opportunity to make the necessary steps in protecting the Island’s countryside, which has been his home his entire life.

 

Growing up in Godshill, Nathan attended Christ the King College before his abilities led to him being awarded a music scholarship for his Sixth Form studies at Ryde School. Under singing teacher Tressa Lambert, he surpassed Grade 8 in singing, receiving a distinction in the ARSM vocal diploma and is now is studying Classical Performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London.

 

But Islanders may know him best from treading the boards: at Medina Theatre as Jean Valjean in the production of Les Miserables (pictured), and in particular as part of the well regarded and popular Island Savoyards (‘My Fair Lady’, ‘Christmas Carol’, ‘Sister Act’). In April 2020 Nathan was set to play the lead role in the new ‘Half A Sixpence’ musical, ‘Kipps’, but this was sadly cancelled due to the pandemic. Whilst the theatres have been closed, Nathan has turned his energies towards campaigning on environmental issues.

 

 

Nathan says “The proposals to drill for oil and gas on the Isle of Wight are so short-sighted. To address the climate crisis we must keep the oil in the ground. Fossil fuel exploration on the Island is a local issue, but of national importance. When the plans were detailed last year I helped to gather a group of determined young people to join the campaign to formally express concerns about these proposals, and to date we have witnessed over 3,400 objections.

 

“Young people exercising their right to vote in these council elections really have the potential to bring change to the Isle of Wight. Please ensure that you have registered to vote!”

Nathan Stubbings will be standing as the Green Party candidate for Cowes South and Northwood.
